SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimization.” This is the process in how to improve the traffic to a web site from different search engine, such as: Google. You typically want your sites page rank to be at the top of the list. Then visitors see your site and go to that one first. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific search engines.

SEO involves many factors involving how search engines work and what people are searching for. This is part of the Internet marketing strategy. If you edit the content of the HTML coding to match specific key words, the search engine can find your site easier.

SEO is simply a set of methods in which to garner high rankings naturally (aka “organically”) for certain keyterms in search engines. In other words, if a website wants to be found by a surfer using a search engine, such as Google, then they must make their site compliant to certain standards if it wishes to be ranked high for its keyterms/categories.

For example, if Bob’s Bumpers want to be at the top of the page for results when a surfer searches for “1998 Honda Accord Front Bumper”, then it must not only optimize the code on its site but must make sure the site or a specific page is designed specificallly for the keyterm “1998 Honda Accord Front Bumper”.

The History of Portland, Oregon began in 1843 on the Willamette River in what was then called Oregon Country. In 1845 the name of Portland was chosen for this community and on February 8, 1851 the city was incorporated. Portland has continued to grow in size and population with the 2000 Census showing 529,121 residents in the city.

The spot on the banks of the Willamette River now known as Portland was originally called “The Clearing.” In 1843, William Overton began to develop the area, but he soon sold half his claim to Francis Pettygrove of Portland, Maine. The two partners flipped a coin, agreeing to name the new settlement after the winner’s home town. Pettygrove won, and the United States gained cities named Portland on both its coasts.

Oregon’s territorial capital was 12 miles upstream of Portland and it drew more early development, but ultimately, Portland’s better position at the head of Willamette River navigation won out. By 1850, Portland boasted about 800 inhabitants, a sawmill and hotel.

Portland remained a major port until the 1890s, when the railroad reached Seattle, and goods could be transported overland into Oregon rather than navigating dangerous waters at the mouth of the Columbia River. By the early twentieth century, Portland became a center of the lumber industry.
